Hen & Homestead works because neighbors treat each other with respect. These guidelines are what that looks like in practice.

✅ What's welcome

  • Items for sale, trade, or giveaway — household goods, furniture, tools, clothing, electronics, and more.
  • Local service offers: handypersons, pet care, tutoring, cleaning, etc.
  • Pets for rehoming (with a small rehoming fee to deter resellers).
  • Lost & found posts for pets, belongings, or valuables.
  • Community questions: recommendations, "what was that sound?" questions, local knowledge.
  • Local events, announcements, garage sales, and community happenings.

🚫 What's not allowed

  • Illegal items or services — no controlled substances, stolen property, counterfeit goods, or services illegal in your area.
  • Dangerous items — no unserialized firearms, unregistered weapons, or anything requiring a license to sell that you don't have.
  • Harassment or hate — no posts targeting individuals, hate speech, or discriminatory content.
  • Spam — no duplicate posts, mass-posting, or automated listings. One post per item.
  • Deceptive listings — no misleading descriptions, fake photos, or bait-and-switch.
  • Personal information — don't post others' personal information without consent (doxxing).
  • Commercial mass selling — we're for individuals and small local businesses, not warehouse or drop-shipping operations.
  • Live animals sold for commercial purposes — rehoming only, with normal limits.

💬 How to post well

  • Use clear, honest titles and descriptions. What is it? What condition is it in? Why are you selling/giving it away?
  • Add photos — listings with photos get far more responses.
  • Set a fair price. "Free to good home" is welcome. Don't post "make offer" with no context.
  • Mark your post sold/closed when the item is gone. It's neighborly.
  • Don't ghost people who reach out. Even a "sorry, no longer available" message is appreciated.
